TUNNEY, James Joseph "Gene" [1897-1978] -- American boxer
He defeated Jack Dempsey twice to gain and retain
the heavyweight championship of the world (1926, 1927).
He retired (1928) as an undefeated heavyweight champion
with career record 76 wins and one loss.
His only defeat in the professional ring came in 1922 as light-heavyweight champion
vs Harry Greb.
He regained the title the next year.
After his retirement from boxing,
he had a successful business carreer,
participated in civic affairs.
During World War II,
with the rank of lieutenant commander and later commander in the US Naval Reserve,
he served as director of athletics and physical fitness of navy personnel.
