He defeated Jack Dempsey twice to gain and retain the heavyweight championship of the world (1926, 1927). He retired (1928) as an undefeated heavyweight champion with career record 76 wins and one loss.

His only defeat in the professional ring came in 1922 as light-heavyweight champion vs Harry Greb. He regained the title the next year.

After his retirement from boxing, he had a successful business carreer, participated in civic affairs. During World War II, with the rank of lieutenant commander and later commander in the US Naval Reserve, he served as director of athletics and physical fitness of navy personnel.  -30-

1919
He won the light heavyweight championship of the American Expeditionary Force in Paris.
1922/05/23
Harry Greb gives Gene Tunney his only professional boxing defeat.
1923/02/23
Tunney regains his American light heavyweight title by a 15-round decision over Greb.
1926/09/23
The first Dempsey-Tunney fight. Gene Tunney easily out-boxes Jack Dempsey (who had been away from the ring for three years) and wins the heavyweight boxing title in Philadelphia PA.
1927/09/22
The second Dempsey-Tunney fight. The famed "long count" saves Tunney and he retains his title.
1928
Tunney retires from the ring.
