Origin
English :
Various changes in spelling and form have occurred throughout the centuries in the surname Wheeler, dating from its introduction in the 8 century. In the Domesday Book, that famous record of William the Conqueror, the name appears as "Weleret", the bearer of the name being recorded as "a landholder". Hugh le Welere is mentioned in the One Hundred Rolls in 1273, and Richard le "Whelere" on the Close Rolls in 1348. The origin is sometimes assigned as Wheeler or maker of Wheels, but the spelling Wheeler does not appear until a date later than in usual for the occupational surname.

An early spelling is evidently a compound of the the two Anglo-Saxon words "Wel" or "Wiel", meaning prosperous or fortunate, from which derivation the modern word wealth may be traced; and the Anglo-Saxon word "hari" or "heri", a warrior, a root tracable in the modern word "hero". Therefore a very logical meaning may be assigned to the name, that of "the lucky Warrior", or the "prosperous hero". [A.G.Wheeler; "Wheeler Family in America", Introduction, pp. xi-xii.]
