Governor of Connecticut (1655, 1658)

Thomas Welles was an original proprietor of Hartford, with a lot on what is now Governor Street. He was the colony's first Treasurer, from 1639 to 1651. In 1655, and again in 1658, he was elected as Governor of Connecticut. His name is on the Founders' Obelisk in the Ancient Burying Ground to the right of Center Church on Main St. in Hartford.

When he was elected governor in 1658, his oldest son, John, was elected as a magistrate and his youngest son, Samuel, a deputy to the General Court, so that he presided over a court in which one son sat as magistrate and another as a deputy.

From 1637 to his death in 1659/60, his name appears on almost every page of the Connecticut Colony records.  -30-
