Contents:

First comptroller of the U.S. Treasury (1778-79); Secretary on Washington's staff (1781-83); Member of U.S. House of Representatives (1789-95); Speaker of the House (1791-93); U.S. Senator (1795-1796); Governor of CT (1797-1809). Jonathan was the only one of the Royal colonial governors to support the colonials in the American Revolution.

His father, Jonathan Trumbull, Sr. [1710-1785], was also active in the American Revolution, and was also governor of CT (1769-1784).

His brother, John Trumbull [1756-1843], was a well-known painter of patriotic themes and notables of the day. He was commisssioned by Congress (1817) to paint four large pictures for the rotunda of the Capitol at Washington:

  1. Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga
  2. Surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown
  3. Declaration of Independence
  4. Resignation of Washington
