LESTRANGE, Roger (Sir)
[1616-1704] – English journalist and Royalist pamphleteer

He was licencer of the press under Charles II and James II,
and served in the royal army against Parliament.
In an attempt to carry out a plot for the capture of Lynn he was betrayed,
arrested, and condemned to death, but remained in Newgate prison until 1648,
when he was allowed to escape to the Netherlands,
returning to England 1653.
In 1663 he was appointed surveyor of printing offices and licenser of the press,
and founded The Public Intelligencer and The News,
both of which ceased to exist in 1666.
From 1681 to 1687 he published issues of the Observer.
He published a great number of political pamphets.
