The "Hero of the Battle of Lake Erie" during the War of 1812, he
captured the entire British fleet - a first for the flabbergasted British.
When his flagship was badly damaged, he simply transferred his standard,
"Don't Give Up The Ship", to the Niagara
and went on to win the engagement and the battle.
After the battle he sent this famous dispatch to General Harrison:
"We have met the enemy and they are ours."
This was famously lampooned by Walt Kelley's cartoon character, Pogo Possum, as:
"We have met the enemy and he is us."
The War of 1812, and the Battle of Lake Erie,
were important milestones in securing the integrity of the new-forged United States of America.
