The "Hero of the Battle of Lake Erie" during the War of 1812, he captured the entire British fleet - a first for the flabbergasted British. When his flagship was badly damaged, he simply transferred his standard, "Don't Give Up The Ship", to the Niagara and went on to win the engagement and the battle. After the battle he sent this famous dispatch to General Harrison: "We have met the enemy and they are ours." This was famously lampooned by Walt Kelley's cartoon character, Pogo Possum, as: "We have met the enemy and he is us."

The War of 1812, and the Battle of Lake Erie, were important milestones in securing the integrity of the new-forged United States of America.

1802	promoted to lieutenant
1807-09	Engaged in building gunboats for President Jefferson's naval program

1813/09/10	First capture of an entire British fleet (Battle of Lake Erie)
1814	Received the thanks of Congress for his part in the war
1819	Contracted yellow fever on the Orinoco River, Venezuela, and died at sea off Trinidad
