He organized (1883) a veterinary division in the Bureau of Agriculture,
and upon it designation as the Bureau of Animal Husbandry
became its chief, serving as head until 1905;
He described the Salmonella bacterium, which is named for him. 
1876 | Recieves first DVM granted in US, by Cornell University |
1879 | He is a key participant in the New York State campaign to wipe out pleuro-pneumonia in cattle. |
1883-1905 | He is the founding director of the Bureau of Agriculture |
1905 | He resigns the bureau in a dispute with the head of the Department of Agriculture |
1906 | He is invited by the Uruguayan government to supervise the establishment of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montevideo. |
1910 | Returns from Uruguay |
1913 | Director of a private pharmaceutical company producing serum against swine cholera in Butte, Montana. |
