He organized (1883) a veterinary division in the Bureau of Agriculture, and upon it designation as the Bureau of Animal Husbandry became its chief, serving as head until 1905; He described the Salmonella bacterium, which is named for him.  -30-

He is a key participant in the New York State campaign to wipe out pleuro-pneumonia in cattle.

He is the founding director of the Bureau of Agriculture

He resigns the bureau in a dispute with the head of the Department of Agriculture
1906
He is invited by the Uruguayan government to supervise the establishment of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Montevideo.
1910
Returns from Uruguay
1913
Director of a private pharmaceutical company producing serum against swine cholera in Butte, Montana.
