A remarkable person of unflinching character; A great American.

He [was] a politician and municipal reformer of New York city; and president of the board of police commissioners of New York city from 1895 to 1897, when he resigned that position to become assistant secretary of the navy. During the Spanish-American war he served with distinction as colonel of the Rough Riders. In November, 1898, he was elected governor of the state of New York. [HE, 1902]

He was, of course, subsequently elected 25th Vice President under McKinley, succeeding to the presidency (26th) when McKinley was assassinated in 1901. He was elected president in 1904, but was defeated seeking reelection in 1908, by William H. Taft.  -30-
