RUSSELL, Bertrand Arthur William [1872-1970] -- British philosopher, mathematician, and social reformer., 3rd Earl Russell

3rd Earl Russell
He was a man of principles, possessed of a keen intellect. A prolific writer, he produced over 90 books.
While working on his definitive Principia Mathematica he discovered
what is now called Russell's Paradox:
If we have a class that is not a member of itself -
is it a member of itself?
If yes, then no, if no, then yes.
After discussions with Wittgenstein Russell
was forced to accept the view that mathematical statements
are tautologies,
not truths about a realm of logico-mathematical entities.
I think that this discovery "spoiled" the field for him,
as he never again worked intesively in mathematics.
