Ruggles Brothers, The

On 14 May 1892, just outside of Redding, CA, John Ruggles and his younger brother, Charles, held up the stage.

In the course of the robbery, the driver was shot and killed, and Charles was wounded. Thinking that his brother was a gonner, John took the money and ran. Now, the strongbox was heavy with gold, and John thought that it might impede his getaway, so he buried it.

John was later captured and reunited in jail with his brother, who was recovering from his wounds.

Outraged by the death of the stage driver, a mob stormed the jail on 24 July and took the brothers. Despite John's pleas of promising to reveal the hiding place of the loot -- which was reportedly sizable -- they were lynched.

The buried robbery proceeds were never recovered.  -30-
