HENRY, O.

He led quite an exciting life until a prison term caused him to turn to writing to pass the time of his sentence. There he found his unique talent for writing short stories, of which he sold about a dozen to various magazines prior to his release in 1901.

Settling on the pseudonym "O. Henry", he contributed at least one story a week to a number of magazines, until his death ten years later, when his hard drinking caught up with him and ruined his liver.

O. Henry and Mark Twain are arguably the quintessential American writers.  -30-
