The Plantagenets: A long line of English kings (1154-1399) founded by Henry II, son of Geoffrey, Count of Anjou, and Matilda, daughter of Henry I of England. Four distinct houses can be identified:

The line became extinct in the direct succession on the death of Richard II in 1400, the year after he was deposed. There followed 85 years of tumult, the so-called War of the Roses, as the competing cadet houses of Lancaster (red rose) and York (white rose) battled it out for control of the throne. This was brought to conclusion when Henry Tudor, a Lancastrian, defeated the Yorkist Richard III on Bosworth Field, claiming the throne as Henry VII Tudor. ¤ He shortly married Elizabeth of York, uniting the two families.
Henry "The Young King" was the son of Henry II,
and his 1170 coronation was an effort on the part of his father,
who was still very much alive, to insure the succession.
This plan was thwarted by his son's inconsiderate demise,
predeceasing his father by six years!
