He was a Loyalist during the Revolutionary War.
After election as president of Columbia,
he continued his duties as bishop and rector.
He was the first president not expected to teach regularly and
the first graduate of the College to become its president.

1804 | Gives last rites to the mortally wounded Alexander Hamilton |
1811 | Resigns Columbia presidency due to ill health |
