MERRIAM, Florence Augusta [1863-1948] -- American pioneer naturalist
As a young woman she was considered a radical environmentalist.
She campaigned tirelessly against the current ladies fashion,
which accounted for the slaughter of millions of birds for their feathers.
She was an early advocate of studying birds with binoculars instead of the
then current shotgun method.
