• LEE, Fitzhugh [1835-1905] – American army officer, major-general LEGH145 9C7
A member of the US army, he entered the Confederate service as a commander of cavalry in 1861 and served notably in Peninsular operations (1861-1862), in the Chancellorville campaign (1863), and at Spotsylvania Court House (1864). He was Governor of Virginia (1886-1890), consul general in Havana (1896-1898), major-general of volunteers in the Spanish-American War, and was military governor of Havana (1899) after that war.

He wrote (1894) a biography of General Robert E. Lee, his uncle. MWBD

He was a brilliant cavalry commander in the Revolutionary War, known especially for the capture of the fort at Paulus Hook, NJ; served variously in the Virginia legislature, the Continental Congress, the U.S. House of Representatives, and was Governor of Virginia; suppressed the Whisky Rebellion in PA (1794).

He was one of the creators of the Hawaiian constitutional monarchy. Having stopped (1846) at Hawaii on a trip to Oregon, he was persuaded to remain and was appointed one of the judges for the island of Oahu. He was chief justice (from 1847) of the new supreme court which became (1852) the nominal and factual highest court. He served as Hawaiian minister (from 1855) to the U.S. NCCN
