HICKOK, James Butler "Wild Bill" [1837-1876] -- American frontiersman
| Contents: |
A colorful character, he was at various times:
a scout for the army,
a teamster for a stage company,
a sharpshooter for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show,
a lawman,
a gambler.
It was the later activity that did him in.
He was shot in the back whilst playing poker in Saloon #10 in Deadwood, Dakota Territory.
He was holding a hand of aces and eights, ever after known as the "dead man's hand".
(The name of the saloon speaks volumes!)
