HAWLEY, Charles Beach, Prof. [1858-1915] -- American composer
| Contents: |
In his youth he attended Cheshire Military Academy, where he took prominent part in all the musical activities of the school. In 1875 Mr. Hawley went to New York City to study voice with George James Webb, Rivarde and Federlein; and composition with Dudley Buck, Mosenthal and Rutenbar. After a year's work he became soloist at Calvary Episcopal Church and later assistant organist at St. Thomas'.
For twenty-five years, Mr. Hawley was a vocal instructor with studios in New York. For seventeen years he was solo bass and choir director at the Broadway Tabernacle and for ten years was a director of the Metropolitan College of Music. He was one of the charter members of the Mendelssohn Glee Club. For four years he was organist and choir-master of the Madison Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church. Later he was organist of the West End Presbyterian Church.
All of his compositions were characterized by a charming simplicity coupled with melodic individuality -- in short, they were expressions of Mr. Hawley himself and like him will not be forgotten. [Emily C. Hawley, Annals of Brookfield]
