Prevented by his father's death from attending college, he educated himself and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1859. He held a number of political posts, including two non-consecutive terms as President of the United States, becoming the only American chief executive to do so.

He was the first Democratic president elected after the Civil War. A batchelor when elected, he married during his term, becoming the only president married in the White House. He was the first president to be photographed by a motion picture camera.

Cleveland holds the unique distinction of being the only US president to have personally executed a death sentence. As sheriff of Erie County, NY, it was his duty to carry out all executions, which he had occasion to do twice during his term, in 1872 and in 1873.
