Missionary among the Seneca and Delaware Indians (1744-1747) of New York, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania, he was born in Connecticut in 1718, and died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-nine in 1747. His mentor, the great Jonathan Edwards, preached his funeral sermon and published the diary which David had kept.

He was the older brother of missionary John Brainerd, who continued his work when he died.  -30-
