While Minister to France, he helped block French aid to the Confederacy.
He was a prolific writer, contributing numerous articles to the periodicals of
a life of Benjamin Franklin, a monumental edition of Franklin's complete works
in 10 volumes, and his own autobiography in only 5 volumes.
