Served as commissioner of the New England Confederation
(1646-79) and twice as governor (1679-86, 1689-92);
married Anne Dudley, America's first poet, daughter of Governor Thomas Dudley.
Two of their sons were accused of witchcraft but not tried;
A daughter (Dorothy) married Seaborn Cotton,
son of the famous Puritain clergyman John Cotton, known as "The Patriarch of New England."
