He was the illegitimate son of Luiz, Duque de Beja, by Violanta "la Pelicana" Gomez (who was born a Jew, and died as a nun at Almorta). Recognized by England and other powers as King of Portugal in 1580, he and his descendants, known as "the Portuguese Princes", were political pawns for the next few decades as Spain conquered Portugal and the powers threatened to restore these princes. |
