I have scanned for your enjoyment 2 Prize List booklets
from early Fair /Exhibition books from the Peace River area of Alberta.
Local agricultural societies would host sports days and
fairs annually.
These books were published to advise of the rules of
the event, the categories to be judged at the fair and what the prices
would be.
Categories would include livestock, produce, handiwork,
baking, children's entries and much much more.
Local businesses put advertisements in the booklets to
help pay for the publishing of them.
5th Annual
Exhibition Hosted by the Griffin Creek Agricultural Society
Dates for this one are recorded as September
25 and 26 1916. Someone has penciled in the 27th as well.
Griffin Creek was an early community in the area.
Griffin Creek is where my father was raised. His parents were Askew
Beatson (Art) and Clementina (Loake) Dixon.
2nd Annual Fair by
the Berwyn Agricultural Society
Berwyn was a later community to be established,
but it was soon to take over as a more major centre.
This fair may have replaced the one previously held in Griffin
Creek.
At the time of this fair my grandfather William Beattie was president
of the Berwyn Agricultural Society and his wife Edna was on the Board of
Directors.
It must have been a very difficult time for them as the fair was held
less than 2 months after the death of their only child Elizabeth
I have included a map of the area that pinpoints the communities.
