"CHILBOLTON is a village and parish on the river Test, about 1½ miles north-east from Fullerton station on the Andover and Redbridge branch of the London and South Western railway and 4½ south-east from Andover, in the Western division of the country. Wherwell hundred, Andover union, county court district and petty sessional division, rural deanery of Stockbridge and archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester.
The church of St. Mary, first erected about 1300, is an edifice in the early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of two bays, aisles, south porch and a small south-western tower with a wooden bell chamber and an octagonal broach spire and containing 3 bells; the pulpit, screen and reading desk are good examples of Perpendicular wood carving; the east window is stained; the church was partially restored during the period 1869-78 and completely in 1893, at a cost of £1,900, and affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1699. The living is a rectory, net income £400, with residence and 11 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Winchester, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Augustus Newton Obbard M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge.
A sum of money was left by Dr. Layfield, a former rector, for apprenticing the children of parents resident in this parish. The lecture hall and reading room, built by subscription in 1891, will hold 200 persons. The Dean and Chapter of Winchester are lords of the manor and principal landowners.
The soil is gravel and chalk, subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 3,120 acres of land and 14 of water; assessable value, £1,538; the population in 1891 was 358.
Post Office -- Frederick Annell, sub-postmaster. Letters received from Stockbridge R.S.O. at 7.30 a.m. & 2.30 p.m.; dispatched at 6.35 p.m. & 11.15 a.m. on sundays. The nearest telegraph office is at Fullerton Railway station, 1 mile distant & money order office at Wherwell.
National School, built in 1844 & enlarged in 1872; a room added in 1878 and further enlarged in 1894; it will hold 120 children; average attendance, 90; George Duckett, master.
School at Chilbolton Down; Miss Jane Freeman, mistress, this school is used for Church of England services every sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
