From U of Edin. Lib. MS File La.IV.7.1 : Document 1

They (Laing Arms)are found in several early Heraldic M.S. quartered with the arms of Erskine: Virt - Argent a Pale Sable, which of course indicates an alliance with that family. This alliance must have taken place before the middle of the XV century - as is sufficiently proved by the seal of John Laing who was Bishop of Glasgow AD 1474, & this is the earliest evidence yet.

The piles in the 2d & 3d quarter of the Bishop's Shield are not conjoined in point, like those in the first example, this difference is not, however, of much moment, the treatment of this charge varying very much, it requires to be more carefully blazoned than perhaps any other charge.
