This member's
family history and tradition have his ancestor, Albert emmigrating
and enlisting in the US Marine Corps, being stationed in Guam,
where he married and raised his family. Record searches have
shown Albert's parents to be the emigrees, with Albert having
been born in New York. Just another one of those mysteries
that surround us in genealogical research!
No matter which account of the
time of Albert's arrival on US soil, his military service
and the time of of the Japanese occupation of Guam during
WWII is one of great interest, both for family history and
the history of the war itself.
This is Albert's story, as shared
by his grandson, this project member.

"I am still puzzled by grandpa's birth date and/or place.
The story my
mom shared with me that she'd picked up from talking with
my grandpa was that he left home (England), came to the U.S.,
joined the Marine Corps, and found himself out here on a small
island called Guam.
He must have liked it here, left military
service in 1907 and less than a year later was married.
A late bishop of Agana (American Bishop Apollinaris
Baumgartner shared with me one day--
I was a 8th grade student at the time--that
he knew Grandpa Manley.
Grandpa Manley (Albert cjms)
was interned prisoner of Japan in Kobe.
He along with all the non-Guamanians were
rounded up by the Japanese soldiers, put on a ship, and sent
to Japan and there they remained until the end of WWII.
Grandma Manley died during the Japanese occupation of Guam,
shortly
before its liberation.
The bishop said that he used to visit Grandpa
just about every Sunday. This was shortly after WWII. A couple
of things
he also shared was that he enjoyed visiting with him because,
although
he knew Grandpa was suffering a lot -- he was blind at this
point and
pretty much confined to room -- he was always very cheerful
and at times
would entertain the bishop by reciting poetry (some he composed
himself.) The bishop noted that he also enjoyed hearing him
speak in his
English accent."
