Please note,
I am using the spelling for the surname as found on original
documents dating back to the individual's time (census, military,
etc...)
The earliest
colonial history we have for this branch comes from Professor
Louise Manly's 1930 book "The Manly Family". Some
historians state the family heritage as being Scot, others
Irish and still others English. The one person we have solid
information, backed by documentation (American Revolution
records) is Basil Manley, born 1742. We know from Louise that
Basil's father was Thomas. Basil also had a brother named
Thomas who remained in MD or VA when Thomas, Sr. decided to
relocate the family to NC after his wife's death (circa 1756).
According
to Louise, Thomas (Jr.) was in the "American Navy"
at the time of the American Revolution.
