*New Resource!

Project members are submitting family Gedcom outlines (Family Trees), which are being uploaded to each members page.

More than half of the project members have this information listed on their individual project member page.

For those project members who have not submitted them to me yet, PLEASE remember this is a crucial step in proven research.

The results below show the ethnic origin for our project members, broken down into "Exact", "1 Step"and "2 Step" matches.

These results are from the database at FTDna, submitted by each individual as they submit their sample for testing. These individuals provide information as to paternal country of origin, to the best of their knowledge.

In some cases, the individuals are not sure of their paternal ethnic origins, so enter "Unknown Origin". I have excluded the "unknowns" for a "clearer" picture of the DNA matches of our project members. What these results and charts represent are the matches our project members had with those who have listed their paternal country of origin, broken down by those countries.

The information below is quoted from FTDna's site, for a further explanation of Ethnic Origin Results:

"Over the span of generations people tend to move, as do borders, so nationality or ethnicticity becomes subjective. For example, testees may enter Germany for ethnic origin, because the land of their ancestors is Germany today, but the land could have been held by Denmark for many centuries.

Exact matches show people who are the closest to you genetically. The Ethnic origin shows where they have reported to have lived. Since many persons migrated over the past few centuries, you will typically see matches in more than one country."

I have compiled the results of all of our project members and have created the charts below to help give a "visual" on how the DNA matches for country of origin change with each step. I enjoy viewing the change in percentages as you go back from one step to the next.

It's also interesting to note that in some instances there have been very few samples submitted to FTDna from a specific country For example, Shetland has only 144 members in the database listing Shetland as paternal country of origin. Several members of our project match those samples;

  • 14 exact matches
  • 243 repeats matching going "back" a step show a large increase in matches
  • 261 match going back yet another step show a leveling off between the 1st & 2nd "step" distances.

I'm sure that as time passes and more individuals register and others change or correct paternal country of origin we may see a far more concise picture evolve for the migration of our ancestors.

I hope you find these charts of interest too.

The numbers in (brackets) on the legend of each chart indicates the number of individuals in the FTDna database that our project members were compared to.

Understanding DNA testing.

A basic primer on DNA testing and genealogy

How many markers and where to test?

We strongly encourage project members to test for 25(+) markers, to generate more accurate results.

For those earliest members of our project, we would love to see those who can, upgrade to the 25(+)

FamilyTreedNA provides group discounts for testing through projects conducted through them.

They provide comparisons to other project members and others in their database, Haplogroup results, as well as "RECENT ETHNIC ORIGINS (REO) Database of genetic test results".

It is not required that all individuals participate through FamilyTreedNA, but those submitting results from other facilities (Such as DNAHeritage) will take longer to have their results included in the project and they will not have the "RECENT ETHNIC ORIGINS (REO) Database of genetic test results".
