Keeping Watch
Mount Olivet Cemetery is located off of Interstate 70 in historic Frederick,
Maryland. It was established in 1852 as a final resting placed for the residents
of Frederick. As the Civil War began to swirl around Frederick, it became evident
that a place was needed to bury those that were killed or died from wounds received
in battle or died from disease. In the back of Mt Olivet, a small section was
set aside for this purpose. There are 280 known and at least 408 unknown Confederate
soldiers buried here from the battles of South Mountain, Sharpsburg, Monocacy
and numerous smaller engagements and the local hospitals.
