The 1st Division found that the usefulness of the field laboratory was impaired by the limited amount of transportation at its disposal, and that it was of less value in active operations than when the division occupied quiet or semi-permanent sectors. Mobile laboratories were added to the sanitary trains of the U.S. Army divisions, and they proved to be of great value in the examination of water supplies, pathological specimens, and in determining wound bacteriology.
