MANUMISSION OF LEWIS ROBERSON

This day personally appears in open court Abel Landers and by petition moved the court that he wished to emancipate and set free a certain colored man named Lewis now his own right and property the said Lewis having been a slave for life of the age of about 40 years of a black color and a cripple in his hip where upon the said Abel Landers entered into bond with Dudley P. T. House his security in the sum of two hundred dollars (that being the estimate value of said Lewis) conditioned that the said Lewis moves forthwith beyond the limits of the state. It is therefore considered by the court that said Lewis be emancipated under the condition aforesaid only and pay the costs which have accrued in this behalf. The Justices present and voting for the said Emancipation Galbreath Barnett A. H. Coffey, Henry Dean, Eakin Fisher, Grear, House, Jones, Lee, Marbury, Murpha [?], Nash Phillips, Rayburn, Steel & Wilhoite. The said petition having the following indorsement and order of court to wit the court have by unanimous vote granted the petition of Abel Landers this 14th [should read 4th?] day of September 1837.

I William Dorr Clerk of the County Court of Bedford County hereby certify that the foregoing a true transcript of the records of my office in a certain matter their recorded where Able Landers now a resident of said County emancipated and set free a certain colored man named Lewis hereto fore owned by him as a slave
In testimony where of I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of the Court at office in Shelbyville this sixth day of September A. D. Eighteen hundred and thirty seven and of the American Independence the 62nd year.

BILL OF SALE FOR TEMPY ROBERSON

Know all men by these presents that I Abel Landers of the county and state aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum of four hundred and fifty dollars to me in hand paid and made sure, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have this day bargained sold and delivered unto Lewis Roberson of the county and state above written a certain Negro woman named Tempy said Lewis Roberson's wife and as to her health he knows as much about it as I do. I do hereby warrant and defend the title and right to the said Negro to the said Lewis Roberson against the lawful claim of all and every person, whatsoever, in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 14th day of January 1839.

Be it remembered that on this the 21st day of June A. D. 1841 personally appeared before me Milton Sexton the clerk of the Circuit Court of Newton County Abel Landers who is personally known to me to be the propper [sic] person who signed the foregoing instrument of writing and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed for the purpose therein contained.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my private seal, there being no official seal of said county yet provided this 21st day of June 1841.

BILL OF SALE FOR SARAH ROBERSON

Know all men by these presents that I Abel Landers of the state and county aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars in promisary nots to wit one for one hundred and fifty dollars executed payabel on the 25th day of December next the other for one hundred dollars made payable on the 1st day of April 1843, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have this day bargained sold and delivered unto Lewis Roberson of the State and County aforesaid a certain negro girl named Sarah now about five years and six months old which said negro I do hereby warrant and defend title and right to the Lewis Roberson & against the lawful claims of all persons whatsoever.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 28th day of February 1842.

BILL OF SALE FOR GILBERT ROBERSON

Know all men by these presents that I Abel Landers of the State of Missouri and County of Newton for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and thirty dollars in cash paid and in a promisary note for one hundred dollars bearing ten per cent interest from this date due one year after date the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have this day bargained sold and and [sic] delivered unto Lewis Roberson of the state and county aforesaid a certain negro boy named Gilbert now about eleven years old which said negro I do hereby warrant and defend the right and title to the said Lewis Roberson against the lawful claims of all and every person or persons whatsoever.
In testimony where of I here unto set my hand and seal this ninth day of January 1844.

And now at this day comes into open [court] Lewis Robertson [sic] a free man of coler [sic] and acknowledges as his act and deed hand and seal for the purposes therein expressed and understood an Instrument in writing purporting to be a bill of Emancipation under the hand and seal of said Lewis Robertson and which instrument of writing is the words and figures following to wit

Know all men by these presents that I Lewis Robertson of the County and State aforesaid do by these Emancipate and set free my black boy Gilbert about fourteen years of age and my black girl named Sarah about Eleven years of age being the same Black boy and Black girl purchased of Abel Landers of the county and state aforesaid In witness where of I Lewis Roberson have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifth day of May 1847
