He was a member of a Committee supporting those affected by the Luddites [1813] / a stone merchant [1841] / a stone quarrier & farmer (employing workers).

On 19th October 1809, he married Mary Ann Hanson [1788-1858] at Elland Parish Church.


Mary Ann was born in the City of London and lived in Rastrick

He was a junior clerk [1891] / a solicitor's articled clerk [1901] / a solicitor in Halifax [1909]. He qualified in November 1902.

He took over the practice of John Corrin Bell at Town Hall Chambers, Sowerby Bridge and at Southowram [1905].

He was at Imperial Chambers, Halifax [1934]

On 25th Nov 1909, he married Harriet Edith Eastwood [1871-1951] from Luddenden at St Pauls King Cross.


Harriet Edith was the daughter of Samuel Eastwood
 

They had no children.

Samuel died in Halifax [16th February 1959].

Probate records show that he left an estate valued at £11,769 7/- to Margaret Hodgson (spinster)  and his nephew Philip Garforth Freeman (architect)

He was a pupil elementary teacher [1891] / an assistant teacher [1905].

In 1905, he married Emma Holstead [1877-1956] in Halifax

During World War I, he served as a Lieutenant with C Company 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.

He died in Flanders [12th March 1915].

The Freeman family of Southowram
They were influential in the local stone quarrying business.

They constructed Freeman's Cut, and had a facility at Brookfoot Wharf where barges were loaded for passage to the Humber.

They also had an office and merchant's stone yard on the Thames to receive stone, not just from Southowram, but from Portland to serve the growing London market.
