Western College for Women, Oxford

Founded in Oxford in 1853, Western Female Seminary was modeled after the women's college in Massachuseets, Mt. Holyoke.  Classes began in 1855 with the backing of the Prebyterian Church leadership in Oxford.  In later years the school became known as "The Western: A College and Seminary for Women" and later "The Western College for Women."  In 1971, men were admitted to the school but due to financial problems the school closed in 1974.  The buildings were then purchased by Miami University.
