The South School was built in 1871 and until 1908 included all twelve grades. In 1930, it became an elementary school after the opening of Roosevelt and McKinley Junior High Schools. The school was closed in 1952 by the Middletown Board of Education but was soon reopened as Bishop Fenwick Catholic High School. Fenwick held classed in the building for ten years until it built a new school on Manchester Road. The South School building caught fire in April, 1965, causing extensive damage. The building was later demolished.
