| The Freedom Summer campaign was organized by the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee which sent 1,000 young people to Mississippi to register African-Americans voters and to establish "freedom schools." Three of the student participants, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner were later murdered. | ![]() |
