The colored school of Oxford has originally been located on High Street.  Later it was moved to a larger two-room, one story brick building on North Beech Street.  The pupils ranged in age from five to twenty-five, including former slaves who had never learned to read.  The teachers of the school included Miss Mary Bishop, Miss Josie Underwood, Mr. John East, and Mr. L.E. Grennan.
