Lucy Burch an old and respected lady died last Wednesday at
the home of A. R. Fox. She was never married and was 76 years of age. Her
remains were interred in the Burch grave yard. Rev. J. T. Buford conducted the
funeral services.

Obituary
William T. Fox was born in Person county, NC , Oct. 15th 1818, and died at his home
near Farmville, this county, May 28, 1893. Brother Fox lived in North Carolina
until 1844, when he came to this county, where he has lived ever since. The
writer of this has known him for several years. He was a quiet, unostentatious
man, whose character was consistent and sincere and whose devotion to his
Master never faltered. He enjoyed the confidence of his brethren, the respect
of the community as an honest, upright man, and the love of those who knew him
most intimately. Though not a member of any church he loved the society, and
his house was ever opened to the ministers and brethren. In his domestic
relation he was a devoted husband and father gentle and loving and kind,
possessing a warm heart and cheerful spirit, and always ready to sacrifice his
own comfort for that of others. For 49 years he has lived in this county and
prospered in farming pursuits. Several weeks before death, his health steadily
declined and he suffered much, but endured all with a patient, unmurmuring
spirit. A few day before he died, he seemed to realized his condition, and in
answer as to his future welfare, said it was all right Bro. Fox was twice
married. His first wife was Miss K. Burch, who died in 1856, leaving six
children, five of whom still survive. In March 1859, he was again married, this
time to Miss Mariana Cooper of our county, who, with pure wifely devotion,
nursed him through his long painful illness.

SUICIDE
Though we are not in possession of definite particulars, we
learn that a daughter of Mr. Wm. Fox, living in the lower portion of this
county, on Tuesday, the 8th, committed suicide by jumping into a well. The
young lady had been in a deranged state of mind for some time and had once
before made the attempt to thus end her earthly existence, which induced her
farther to have placed over the well what he thought to be a secure curbing.
When the young lady again made the attempt, it is said she carried out her
design by putting her hands under the curbing, raising it up, and jumping
under.

Lillie Burch, age 63, died at her home Saturday at 9:40 o'clock. She is
survived by four daughters, Miss Frankie Burch, Mrs. Viola Brown, Mrs. Ruth
Cantrell and Mrs. Ophelia Brown, and four sons Jesse, John, Lester and Langford
Burch. One sister Mrs. Mollie Angland, of Shannon Ga. also survives. Funeral

Mrs. John Burch, the former Miss. Lillie Merritt, of Gordon
County, died Wednesday, June 22, at home at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, following
a brief illness. Funeral and interment will be held in Florida on Friday. Mrs.
Burch is survived by her husband, two daughters and one son, all of Fort
Lauderdale, and five sisters, Mrs. J. S. Poarch, of Rome; Miss Sallie Merritt,
Mrs. J. S. Poarch, Mrs. L. A. Gravitt and Mrs. L. B. Bowen of Calhoun. Those

MISS FRANKIE E. BURCH
Miss Frankie E. Burch age 76, of 1002 south Wall Street
Calhoun, passed away in the Gordon County Hospital Saturday at 7 A.M. following
several weeks of illness. She was born in Gordon County September 28, 1886,
daughter of the late John L. and Lillie Brooks Burch, she spent her entire life
in Gordon County and at the time of her death she was a member of the Calhoun
Church of God. Miss Burch is survived by her three sisters, Mrs. Viola Brown,
Mrs. Ruth Cantrell, and Mrs. E. L. Brown all of Calhoun; one brother Lester
Burch of Rome; 17 nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Miss
Frankie E. Burch were held Sunday, Aug. 4 at 2 P.M. from the Calhoun Church of
God conducted by the Rev. C. H. Chambley and the Rev. Gordon W. Mise. Music was
arranged by the Church Trio. Pallbearers serving were Vernon Brown, Buford
Ingle, Mark Brown, Clell Gentry, Otto Timms, and Hubert Shepherd. Burial was in
the family lot of Craneater cemetery on the Red Bud Road with Combs Funeral
Home in charge of the arrangements.

N. A. DOUGHTY Died Thursday After-noon; Buried Friday.
Mrs.
Nancy A. Doughty died Thursday afternoon after a long illness and was buried
Friday in Fain cemetery, the funeral services being conducted at the Baptist
church, of which the deceased was a member, by pastor, Rev. J. C. Atkinson.
Mrs. Doughty was formerly Miss Nancy A. Burch, and during her childhood lived
with her parents near New Town. After her marriage to H. J. Doughty they moved
to Texas and resided many years in that state, principally at Austin. Mr.
Doughty was a very successful business man and soon accumulated a large estate.
He returned to Calhoun about fifteen years ago, and resided here up to his
death which occurred in 1895. Mrs. Doughty has since remained here except when
away occasional visits. Mrs Doughty leaves no children, They had one adopted
son Eugene Doughty. A number of Mrs. Doughty's relatives were present at her
death, among them being her sister, Mrs. J. J. Abbott, from Texas. The funeral
was largely attended.

J. Doughty was a poor man who 35 years before, married a daughter of Mr. Abel
Burch, one of our county's most honored citizens. He married Nancy Ann Burch in
1860 in Calhoun and adopted her son Eugene. Mr. Doughty died in Calhoun on July
4, 1896 at age 60 years. 5 months and 20 days.

Thin Gray Line
The heart of every member of Gordon county,
camp No. 1101, U. C. V. sorrowed at the death of their beloved comrade William
Burch a native Georgian, died at his home near Calhoun, Gordon county which he
was born month, day, year aded seventy years. He lived in Gordon county all his
life excepting the time spent in the Confedrate Army. He entered the Army in
1861 in Company C, 8th Battallion Gist. Brigade Field Division with which he
served most efficidently until he lost his arm accidently by the explosion of a
shell near Charston
S.
C. and was honorable discharged. As a churchman he was always in the line of
his conceived duty, as a citizen he measured up to it full requirements, as a
husband , father and friend he was all that could be asked or required.
The grim reaper has swung his scythe
recently, hither and thither among Confiderates with relentness vigor, and we
who are left are asking ourselves the question, who will be the next. We extend
sympathy to his family as in the loss of such a splended friend and comrade. We
grieve with them and feel that we are objects of sympathy also. Farewell loyal,
upright comrade sleep on until the resurrectionshall awake thee from thy
slumber.

Maine Burch Dies
Maine Burch died in Hamilton Memorial Hospital at Dalton
Thursday morning at 5 o'clock after a lingering illness. He is survived by
three sisters, Mrs. Julia Holsomback, of Plainville; Mrs. Bessie Hodge and Miss
Kate Burch, of Dalton; one brother. Will Burch, of Calhoun, and a host of
nieces and nephews. Mr. Burch had lived in Gordon County before going to
Dalton. Among those from Calhoun attending the funeral of Maine Burch in Dalton
Saturday afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. Will Burch, Mrs. Earl Brown, and daughter
Chris; Mrs. J. H. Connally, Mrs. A. E. Cook, Mrs. J. L. McClurd, and Roy

Mr. Thomas G. Burch and Miss Susan Nickolson
were married at the residence of Mr. Payne, near Harmony church, Sunday
afternoon, the 16 inst., Rev. J. A. Mims performing the ceremony. Tom had
journeyed about half a century into the regions of bachelorhood before taking
unto himself a better half. Marriage is not yet regarded as a failure in these
parts.

THOMAS
G. BURCH ANSWERS LAST CALL
On Sunday afternoon at four o'clock. May 30,
1909, Mr. T. G. Burch who had been confined to his bed for some time with
paralysis died at his home on Piedmont street. Mr. Burch was born on Jan. 23,
1847. He was born and lived his whole life in Gordon county. He was a quite,
honest and peaceable citizen. At the age of sixteen he joined the confederate
army where he did valiant service till its close. He was married on March 16th
1890 to Miss Susan Nicholson. Four children were born to them, one son and
three daughters. All of whom are still living.
He was laid to rest at Harmony Cemetery on
the day following his death. Revs. M. L. Keith and W. V. Hall conducting the

MISS NANCY LENNIE BURCH
Miss Nancy Lennie Burch age 71, passed away in a nursing
home in Macon, Friday, April 9, at 8:30 a. m., following several years of
declining health. She was born and reared in Gordon County, daughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas G. Burch, and spent most of her life here. Miss Burch
was a sister of the late Judson Burch, a former employee of The Calhoun Times.
She was a member of the Church of Christ. She is survived by one sister, Mrs.
Georgia Beavers of Dalton and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were
conducted Sunday, April 11 at 2 o'clock from the chapel of Thomas Funeral Home
with Felton Spraggins officiating. Interment in Fain Cemetery.

WILL
H. BURCH
Will H. Burch, age 77, died Saturday, Jan.
2, at 4 o'clock in the local hospital following a short illness. He was born
and reared in Gordon County and spent his life time here. He was a member of
Belmont Baptist Church. His wife, Mary Frances Blassingame Burch, preceded him
in death on June 18, 1968. He is survived by one son, James H. Burch of
Marietta five daughters, Mrs. Luther Smith of Resaca, Mrs. Earl Brown, Mrs.
Jean Johnson, Mrs. Betty Cook and Mrs. Jimmy McClurd of Calhoun; one sister,
Miss Kate Burch of Chattanooga; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews
also survive. Funeral services for Mr. Burch were conducted Monday, Jan. 4, at
2 o'clock from the Belmont Baptist Church with Rev. John Allen, the Rev. Gene
Tyre and the Rev. Henery Holland officiating. Mrs. George Hayes was in charge
of the music. Pallbearers serving included Billy Tierce, Hugh Prater, Harold
Holsomback, Major S. Gerald Welch, Bill Robertson, John Slage, Billy Muse, and

WILL H. BURCH
Mrs. Will H. Burch, age 74 passed away
Tuesday, June 17 at 6:20 p. m. following an extended illness, in the local
hospital. She was born in Murray County, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sam
Blassingame. Survived by her husband; one son, James H. Burch of Marietta; five
daughters, Mrs. Luther G. Smith of Calhoun, Mrs. Earl Brown of Calhoun, Mrs.
Gene Johnson of Calhoun, Mrs. Bettye Cook of Calhoun, and Mrs. James S. McClurd
of Calhoun; four brothers, Sam Blassingame, Lee Blassingame and Anthony
Blassingame, all of Chatsworth and Wynn Blassingame of Dalton; four sisters,
Mrs. Ben Sitton of Calhoun, Mrs. Harvey Gaugler of Calhoun, Mrs. Frank Dobbs of
Chatsworth and Mrs. Grady Adams; 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren
also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 20, at 3 p. m.
from the Belmont Baptist Church with Rev. Gene Tyre and Rev. Henry Holland
officiating. Mrs. George Hays will be in charge of the music. Pallbearers will
be Bill Roberson, Floyd Whittemore, Billy Muse, Hoyt Edwards, Billy Tierce,
John Slage, Eugene Edge and Hugh Prater. Interment in Fain Cemetery. The body
will remain at the funeral home and will be removed to the church at 2 p. m. to

S-Sgt. G.M.F. Burch Killed in Accident, Mother is Informed.
S/Sgt. George
M.F. Burch was killed in a vehicle accident in Italy, according to information
received by his mother, Mrs. Francis B. Burch, of Calhoun. Mrs. Burch received
the following letter from Lt. Col. E.T. Donahue, division chaplain, First
Armored Division, giving the details of his death: "Dear Mrs, Burch: It
was with sincere sorrow that we learned of the death of your son, Staff
Sergeant George M.F. Burch, who died as a result of a vehicle accident 27
April, 1945. All of us who knew George join in extending to you our most
heartfelt sympathies. He as others of his comrades made the supreme sacrifice
that our Christian way of life may be preserved. George was riding in a
half-track during an administrative movement of his unit, when the vehicle slid
on a wet road, overturned and sank in the water of a canal, resulting in his
being imprisoned within the vehicle. His death was recorded as drowning. He has
been properly identified and buried in a United States Military Cemetery in Northern
Italy in an accurately marked grave. One of our Protestant Chaplains conducted
burial and committal service for him at the grave. George was held in high
esteem by all the officers and men of the company. He was a splendid soldier
and of outstanding character. His loss is deeply felt by his many friends and
associates. May God keep and rest his soul. In reference to George's personal
effects, The Effects Quartermaster, Army Effects Bureau, Kansas City, Missouri,
is the only army agency which is able to furnish you any information or
inventories concerning their disposition. Therefore, it is suggested that any
inquiries you may have be addressed to that agency as personnel overseas are unable to supply this information. While
there is no earthly compensation for the loss of your son, we trust that our
mutual faith in God and our way of life shall sustain us in our hours of
bereavement. All the officers and men of the company join me in extending
sympathy to you for the tremendous loss you have suffered. May Almighty God in
His infinite wisdom grant us through victory an everlasting peace so that such
men as you son shall not have died in vain.
