Ollie took her sister Pearlie in after their father re-married because their stepmother just wanted to get all the girls out of the house.  Pearlie did meet her husband Monroe as a result of this move.

 

Ollie and Charles were married in Tahlequah Indian Territory.  They moved to California in 1923 and then moved back to Oklahoma in 1928.

Married March 4 at Tahlequah, Mr. and Mrs. Murchison lived in Tulsa, Okmulgee and Henryetta following their marriage.  They moved to Amarillo in 1927 and lived there until 1954 when they returned to Tahlequah.

 

Murchison is a retired carpenter.  His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Murchison, were pioneer settlers in Indian Territory in 1902.

 

Mrs. Murchison is the former Pearl Brendel, daughter of a pioneer Baptist Indian missionary.  Her family moved from Georgia to Indian Territory in the 1890's and Mrs. Murchison was born near Hanson, a town no longer in existence, but was once located between Sallisaw and Fort Smith.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Murchison are members of the Tahlequah Methodist Church and the Senior Citizens Club.  He is also a member of the Masonic Lodge.

 

She was married to Monroe MURCHISON (son of Daniel John MURCHISON and Mary Ann RANDOLPH) on MAR 6 1912 in Tahlequah, Cherokee County, OK.  Monroe MURCHISON was born on JUN 28 1889 in Green Forest, AR.  He died on FEB 1 1984 in Tahlequah, Cherokee County, OK.  Pearlie Mae BRENDEL and Monroe MURCHISON had the following children:

398.  Henry Osborne BRENDEL was born on MAR 20 1893 in Gilmer County, GA.  He died on JUN 8 1953 in Pickens County, GA.  He was buried in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Ludville, Pickens County, GA.  From the "Up-Date to the Book", A Search for Haigwood-Hagood-Haygood, Et Cetera, 1650-1984, there is a note from an unnamed researcher, "Henry Osborne Brendel lived with the Luther Hightower family after his parent's death".

 

Note:  This compiler questions the above.  Henry would have been about 17 or 18 years old when his father died.  Albert Nathaniel would have been about 11 or 12 years old when his father died.  Albert may have lived with the Hightower family.  Albert married a woman named Agnes Hightower.

 

Henry was a carpenter and farmer of cotton and corn. Ophelia kept house and did quilting out of necessity.

 

William Henry Brendel states:

 

 "Mom never threw anything away.  I have a letter around here that is post marked 1910 from one of Green's daughters.  She lived out there in Oklahoma with her father who was one of them old time Baptist Ministers and he went out there to minister to the Indians.  That girl wrote that letter to my grandfather [John Frank].  Back in 1970, this girl and her granddaughter from Oklahoma and another girl from Texas showed up at the store in town.  They said they were Brendels and were looking for the Brendels and my son happen to be there, so he sent them up here to me.  They weren't quite sure we were the ones they were looking for.  Mom had just died about a week before they showed up and I had been looking through some papers, when I came across that letter from 1910.  I showed it to them and sure enough it was from her, so she knew we were the right Brendels."

 

"When my granddaddy Brendel died, my granddaddy Tillery hooked up the mules and drove 18 miles with the body.  Mom and Dad weren't even married yet.  Back then, they didn't have embalming or anything.  They would have to bury the body within a day or so.  They had a General Mercantile where he bought the casket and then buried him at Ebenezer."

 

"I can remember my daddy frequently up late at night building caskets for the community.  He was a carpenter, so when somebody would die and need a casket, he made it.  They didn't have electricity back then.  He would use a kerosene lantern.  You know, everybody was poor, so they didn't know they were poor."

“One of the visitors that William Henry speaks of was Myra Dee Nettie Davies, daughter of Joseph Greenberry Brendel.  Nettie lived in Colorado in her later years.”

 

He was married to Katie Ophelia TILLERY (daughter of Thomas Hue TILLERY and Cassie SMITH) on JUN 22 1913 in Pickens County, GA.  Katie Ophelia TILLERY was born on OCT 4 1898.  She died on SEP 15 1970 in Talking Rock, Pickens County, GA.  Henry Osborne BRENDEL and Katie Ophelia TILLERY had the following children:

399.  Albert Nathaniel BRENDEL SR was born on APR 11 1898 in Licklog, Gilmer County, GA.  He died on JUN 2 1983 in Pickens County, GA.  He was buried in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Ludville, Pickens County, GA.  The following is taken from a draft written by Michael Austin Brendel for submission to the Heritage of Pickens County, Georgia, Volume I.

 

Agnes' father lost a leg early in life at a sawmill, but still got around very well on a wooden leg.  As a young girl, Agnes found it difficult to keep up with him when they followed a path through the woods to the one room Evans School where he taught.  William Elmer Hightower also taught at the one room Bennett School.

 

In 1937, Albert was working at Echota Cotton Mill in Calhoun.  A union organization move prompted the company to mount machine guns on the roof of the mill.  33 years would pass before another major union move.

 

Albert and Agnes moved often, until 1955 when they bought 59 acres on Childers Lane of lot 87.  Agnes' sister Cathy, and her husband Lewis Bunch raised their family on the other half of lot 87.

 

Agnes was a lady of the old school.  She put in 18 hour days cooking, cleaning and farming.  With a large family, the wash took two days labor per week.  The water was drawn by hand from a well.  It was then poured into three black iron pots in the yard, one for wash, one for rinse, and one for starch.  It was a chore just to prepare wood for the fire under the pots.

 

The family worked hard growing cotton, cutting pulpwood and raising chickens.  Water for the chicken house was always in short supply. The well couldn't keep up.  Albert often had to hitch his mules, Pet and Anna to his wooden wagon and haul water in 55 gallon drums from Bryant Creek.  He would then have to transfer the water into a tank elevated beside the chicken house.

 

In spite of the hard labor, Albert and Agnes enjoyed their life together, raising 12 kids, 36 grandkids, 71 great grandkids and caring for Agnes' invalid father.  They were generous with what little they had.  If they picked two tomatoes from the garden, one or both was offered to a guest or a neighbor.

 

Albert and Agnes had 12 children.  It is reported that after WW II, around 1948, 5 of Albert's sons moved to the Detroit, Michigan area.

 

Michael Austin Brendel reports:

 

"Picking cotton in the fields wasn't as profitable as the vehicle manufacturing business.  Two of the 5 moved back to Georgia and one moved to California."

 

William Henry Brendel reports:

 

"You know, Albert would have been a big help.  He had the best memory.  He could name off all of those kid's birth dates.  You didn't need a computer back then, all you needed to do was just ask him."

 

Hillard Wayne Brendel, Jr. reports:

 

"We always had the great privilege of living very close to Grandpa and Grandma.  I spent as much time in their house as I did in ours.  One of my fondest memories of Grandpa is when I got my first full sized 26" bike.  He was near 80 at the time, but he had to show me how he could still ride a bike.  Grandpa died just before I turned 17.  I was one of his pall bearers at his funeral."

 

He was married to Agnes HIGHTOWER (daughter of William Elmer HIGHTOWER and Mary Elizabeth PETTIT) on APR 15 1923.  Agnes HIGHTOWER was born on AUG 3 1905.  She died on JUN 18 1999 in Pickens County, GA.  She was buried on JUN 20 1999 in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Ludville, Pickens County, GA.  She was.  As of January 25, 1999 Agnes is in Wildwood Nursing Home, Ludville, Georgia.  Albert Nathaniel BRENDEL SR and Agnes HIGHTOWER had the following children:

Haigwood, USN/Ret., there is a note from an unnamed researcher, "James Arch Brendel lived with the Tilman Bennett family after his parent's death.  He attended the Berry School in Rome, Georgia as a young man".

 

Pat Kilgore reports,

 

"My grandfather [Jim] was a painter.  He was taking a brown bag lunch break.  The brick building next to the one he was painting was being torn down.  He and the boy sitting next to him died when the building collapsed on them.  He was working in Woodstock, Cherokee County, Georgia at the time."

 

"My grandfather [Jim] was very tall, about 6 feet and had blonde/red hair.  I never knew him, I was an infant at the time of his death. Anyone I have talked to about him says that he was very sweet, gentle, tenderhearted, considerate and loving."

 

He was married to Ester Mable LONG (daughter of James Abraham LONG and Samina Jane CRAIG) on JAN 8 1920 in Pickens County, GA.  Ester Mable LONG was born on NOV 3 1899 in Fannin County, GA.  She died on DEC 4 1987 in Talladega, AL.  She was buried in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Ludville, Pickens County, GA.  Ester married after James's death to Carter Johnson.  Carter died before her. She lived with her children, in several different states, taking care of her grandchildren.  James Arch BRENDEL and Ester Mable LONG had the following children:

402.  Clyde Wesley BRINDEL was born on OCT 7 1901 in Gilmer County, GA.  He died on NOV 19 1978 in Sicklerville, NJ.  He was buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA.   

 

He served in the military 1918 – WW I era - enlisted Georgia.  Clyde was 17 when he enlisted.  He apparently thought he was 18.  He learned years later, when he applied for SS retirement benefits that he was not born in 1900 but in 1901.  One month after he enlisted, the war ended.  The Army incorrectly documented the spelling of his last name Brindel instead of Brendel.  He was discharged from the Army from Fort Dix, NJ.  He and a friend got jobs in Camden, NJ and rented rooms in that area. 

 

Clyde worked for Surpass Leather as a leather worker at Allegheny and Glenwood Avenues, Philadelphia, PA.  Clyde was a union organizer and helped organize the leather worker's union prior to WW II.  He was a welder during WW II in the Navy Yard, Philadelphia, PA.  He was a pipe fitter, pipe welder and plumber 1945 era until retirement, working around 2nd Street and Indiana Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. 

 

Clyde Wesley Brindel was born in Gilmer County, Georgia, a mountain area. Sarah Jane died 5 days after giving birth to Clyde.  Clyde's paternal aunt, Martha Clayton nee Brendel, took him when he was 4 days old, to nurse him until he could feed and dress himself, estimated to be age 4.  Clyde was then sent to live with his father, John Frank and his 3 brothers, Henry, Albert and James.  At the time when Clyde was about 10 years old and in the 4th grade, his father died.

 

Michael John Brindel reports:

 

"After their father died, Clyde and Albert, along with 2 mules, went all over the county tilling soil".

 

William Henry Brendel reports:

 

"After my grandfather died [John Frank], my father [Henry Osborne] took charge of the boys.  When my father married my mother [Ophilia] a couple of years later, the boys stayed with my parents for a couple of years.  The boys then went to live with other people.  Clyde lived with someone in the southern part of Georgia.  That's where he joined the Army from."

 

Charlotte (Brindel) Adams reports:

 

"Henry Brendel and his wife Ophilia Brendel (reportedly 13 or 14 years old at the time), took over the responsibility of raising Albert and Clyde.  At around this time Clyde was removed from school and sent to a lumber mill to work as an indentured servant, reportedly in return for farming seeds and supplies. The owner of the lumber mill repeatedly beat Clyde.  Clyde could only visit his family once a year, at Christmas."

 

From the "Up-Date to the Book", A Search for Haigwood-Hagood-Haygood, Et Cetera, 1650-1984, there is a note from an unnamed researcher, "Clyde lived with the Mack Bryant family after his parent's deaths".

 

William Henry Brendel reports:

 

"Back then, in Georgia, if your parents died, you would work in return for groceries.  I think the brothers stayed together for a while.  My father never did like to talk about those years.  Albert's wife Agnes told me once that my father [Henry] was a very good cook.  I guess since he was the oldest brother, he did the cooking.  Agnes said that after her son Dewey was born, my father came over and went right in the kitchen and baked the most delicious cake."

 

Clyde's brothers remained in Georgia to raise their families. It is reported that there is a Brendel Mountain in Gilmer County, GA.

 

At some time in 1924, Clyde's friend got him a blind date with Florence Walburger Treffeisen of Philadelphia, PA.  Clyde and Florence eloped a year later.

 

Clyde and Florence continued to rent the room in Camden, NJ after they married.  When Florence became pregnant with her third child, John, they moved to Philadelphia, PA.  After their children were grown, they lived on "the farm", Sewell, NJ.

 

Clyde enjoyed discussing political issues and was a dedicated fan of major league baseball.  It is reported that Clyde envisioned his 3 sons as professional baseball players.  He was very family oriented.  He always looked forward to the family get-togethers on the weekends with his children and grandchildren.

 

Clyde stayed in his Sewell, New Jersey home for about 2 years after Florence died.  He then rented the home out and lived with his children until his death.

 

He was married to Florence Walburger TREFFEISEN (daughter of Christian TREFFEISEN and Eva Maria SIMON) on JUN 13 1925 in Philadelphia, PA.  Florence Walburger TREFFEISEN was born on AUG 12 1900 in Philadelphia, PA.  She died on OCT 13 1973 in Sewell, NJ.  She was buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA.  Florence reportedly grew up at 2831 N. Laurence Street, Philadelphia, PA. It is reported that Florence did very well in school, but had to leave school around the 8th grade to go to work.  She worked in hosiery factories.

 

It is reported that Florence's mother, Eva Maria Treffeisen, did not approve of her marriage because Clyde was not Catholic.  Florence was estranged from her parents until Clyde and Florence and their 3 month old daughter, Dorothy, were on a riverboat ride and saw Eva Maria and Christian on the boat.  Eva Maria immediately held her granddaughter.  Christian told Florence that everything would be O.K. now that Eva Maria saw the child, and it was from then on.

 

Florence enjoyed crochet, tatting, discussing political issues and was a voracious reader.  She was a lovable person and never interfered.

                                 Clyde attended Germantown High School.  He reportedly didn't do well in school, possibly suffering from dyslexia.  Michael Brindel reports, "Clyde was a phenomenal athlete".  "Clyde was an artist and musician (wind instruments)."  "He wanted to attend Gerard College in New York."  "A Jewish couple that his mother worked for wanted to pay for his education, but his father thought that this was too feminine."

 

                                 In 1948, Clyde's father had him quit high school and enlist in the Army, with the hopes that he would learn a trade and have good future.  Unfortunately, in 1950, the Korean Conflict started and Clyde was sent to Korea.  His battalion was over run by the enemy and began retreating.  The last time Clyde was seen, he was leaning against a tree and one of the men yelled for him to retreat.

 

                                 Near the end of Clyde's father's life, he confided in Charlotte, that he carried a tremendous guilt about his son's death.

 

                                 Clyde is reported to have enjoyed sports and loved animals.  It is reported that Clyde was a very sweet, tender person and that everyone liked him.
