#6917-Jesse Burrell:
"That I am 65 years of age. I claim my Indian descent through my mother
and her father. My father was white. My grandmother was white I think. My
grandfather on my mother's side was named Andy Brown. My mother was born and
raised in Buncombe County, NC. She came to Gilmer Co., GA forty years ago;
since the war. All the time before that she lived in Buncombe Co., NC among the
Indians. She was 1/2 Indian but I don't know where she had any part in the tribal
councils or not. My mother was 65 or 70 years old when she died and she died
since the war. I was enrolled about 12 or 15 years ago by Lock Langly. I paid
him $12.50 and he went off to the Ter with it. That was in the Dawes
Commission. I never heard anything more of it. I nor none of my ancestors were
ever on any roll. I nor by brothers and sisters never lived with the Indians as
a member of the tribe. I am recognized as white with some Indian blood. Never
heard that any of my people ever received anything from the government. Sarah
Haygood is the only sister living and she lives in Licklog, GA. My wife is
white.

area known as The Valley of Death, which is between Devils Den and Little Round
Top. His brother, Bright Burrell, found him mortally wounded and drug him
behind a large boulder to protect them both from enemy fire. Shortly thereafter
Butler died. Bright then wrapped his body in a saddle blanket and had to ride
away to catch up with his own Cavalry unit. Butler's remains were probably
buried in a shallow, unmarked grave, where, according to the National Archives
at Gettysburg, a Confederate soldier's body was found. A marble monument from
the Veteran's Administration in Washington, DC, has been erected in the Burrell
Cemetery, Rabun County, GA in honor and memory of Butler. Great grand nephew

rocks from Gettysburg to scatter around Butler's monument in Georgia. Those
helping to erect the monument were: Great grand niece Sara Burrell Miller and
husband Dr. Carol Raymond Miller from Clemmons, NC; Great grand nephews Andrew
K. Burrell and wife Anna, from New Windsor, MD, Charles W. Burrell from Aurora,

Burrell, wife of Butler Burrell, was sitting on the front porch of their home
in Rabun County, GA. In the distance, Malinda saw a dust whirl-wind coming up
the dirt road leading to the front of their house. As she watched it coming
towards her, she became very frightened. When it slammed into her, she said
"Oh my God, something has happened to Butler!" Later, when Bright
Burrell returned from the War, he confirmed it was at that exact time that his
brother, Butler, died and Bright had to leave his body on the Battlefield in
Gettysburg, PA (story told by Emma Burrell Seaman).
