John B. Bowen is a farmer of Grayson county,a native of Pickens district, South Carolina,and a descendant of an old southern family. His father Thomas H. was also a native of Pickens district. S.C. moved to grayson county, texas,in the fall of 1853,and settled three and a half miles east of Van Alystyne,on what has for many years been known as the old Bowen homestead. He erected one of the first grist mills in the county; he raised a company at the beginning of the late war and served till the close in the Confederate army ; he was one of the oldest, most prosperous and highly esteemed men in the country, and died October 9, 1886, on the anniversary of his seventieth birthday. Mr Bowen was married when he moved to Texas. His wife was a native of the Pickens district,South Carolina. her maiden name was Nancy E. Blassingame. The children of this union are- John B., Elizabeth, William F. who died at Jackson, Mississippi,in the Confederate service; Martha Ann Rebecca, Nancy Jane, Thomas Samuel, Reese L., and Robert Pickens. John Bowen, the eldest of these, and the subject of this sketch, was born in the Pickens district, South Carolina, Sept. 7,1837, and was sixteen years old when his father moved to Texas. He entered the Confederate army in 1862 as a member of of Colonel Richard Randolph's battalion, but was afterward in Colonel Martin's regiment and was in the service in the Indian Nation and north Texas. Returning to Grayson county at the close of the war, he settled in the vicinity od Van Elstyne, and in November, 1867 married Elizabeth L.,daughter of of James Alexander, of Collin county, Texas-originally from Pickens district, South Carolina. By this marriage Mr. Bowen has become the father of the following children - William Franklin, Thomas Alexander, James Robert, John Daniel, George O'Neal, Nova May, Nancy Elvira, Reese Hamilton, Joseph Benjamin, and Charley Lewis. Mr Bowen located where he now lives near Elmont in 1870. he has a farm of 500 acres,100 acres of which he has under cultivation.He is a successful farmer, wide awake, active and progressive. he is a strong Alliance man, has been a Mason since 1861, and a member of the Missionary Baptist church for many years. |
