Notes for Thomas Torrance

Source:  p. 1051 History & Directory of Yates Co., NY

"Thomas Torrance, the father of these families, was a revolutionary soldier, and was a cripple in the service.  He lived many years in a small log house near that of his son, Richard, in Starkey.  He died in 1841, at Avon, at ninety-three.  His wife died at the residence of another son, Hiram, not resident here."

On the web site, Sandgate, Bennington County, Vermont 1790 Census, there is a record for "W'm Torrance" which shows a total of 8 persons in his household, 3 males over the age of 16, 3 males under the age of 16, and 2 females.

Comment:  Sandgate may have been the origin of this family, because the History says that some settlers of Yates County came from Sandgate, Vermont, specifically the Royces, Hurds and possibly others.  There are occasional references in the History to the "Sandgate colony," from which one could conclude that there was a group of families who immigrated from there to Yates County.  Additionally, this William Torrance may have been another child of Thomas, since it appears that not all of the names of Thomas Torrance's children are recorded in the History.
