History of site:
This cemetery is located on land granted to Alexander Jackson [Old 300] by Stephen F. Austin, and would have been located very near to the family’s homestead. After Alexander’s death, the two leagues of land were divided amongst his three children. This site was on his daughter Esther Jackson Thatcher Gillespie’s portion of the land. Esther and her husband Thomas Thatcher would have lived here with their children. Several generations were born and died on this same farm.
Markers found:
Elma Thatcher 6-26-1878 – 9-6-1881
Mary J. Thatcher 1842 – 7-31-1849
Jack Habermacher 9-20-1881
Graves not found but strong probability that the following would be buried there:
Alexander Jackson died before 1829
Anna Knox Jackson [wife] died before 1829
Martha Jackson [daughter] died before 1829
Jane Menefee Thatcher – 1849 mother of the Thatcher boys who came to Texas.
Anna Elizabeth Thatcher 1845-1845 [4 mos.]
Thomas Alex Thatcher 1847-1869
Stonewall Jackson Thatcher 1863 –1869
Robert Thatcher 1860 – 1866
William Thatcher [son of Wm. A.] 3-22-1881 – 9-13-1881
Total of 12 graves, maybe more if we consider the slaves that lived on the plantation.
We believe (but are not certain) that these people are buried across the road on present owner Mark Grisham’s land. (He would not allow us to visit the site, for reasons unbeknownst to us).
