LISSIE CEMETERY TRANSCRIPTION PAGE

A short history of the Lissie Cemetery was compiled by Alice Anderson Schmidt and Nancy Anderson. The last date used was 1990 so it is believed that the information was compiled in that year or 1991. The same people and information was copmpiled for the Lissie Site #1 Cemetery, the Harrington Cemetery and the Boot Hill Cemetery, all in the Lissie area. The history, as written, is as follows:

It is speculated that when the Texas Land and Immigration agent, W. G. Kingsbury with the address of 26 Finsbury pavement, Moorgate St. Station, London E C - England, brought the English colonists over and the first school house was located adjacent to the cemetery property that the cemetery property was set aside for that use all at the same time. The new addition on the tight side of the entrance was added to the original tract in 1920. Mr. W. J. Nugent was caretaker and planted the crepe myrtle trees still in existence today. After his death Hammie Raasch was caretaker. In 1990 Mr. Fred Isenhower of Lissie has been over-seeing the property. Information was gathered from Ed Causey, Ruth McCormick Jerrells, Ruth Clipson Anderson, Haymie Raasch and Fred Isenhower and compiled by Alice Anderson Schmidt and Nancy Anderson.
The earliest known grave was in 1882 and was an infant - Thomas Elder Thompson.

The Cemetery photos were taken by Janet Barrett Hobizal in December 2007(great great granddaughter of Chris and Elsie Gertson). Names and dates were taken from the photographs, the cemetery survey books from the 1990's and the history from above. Some of the names and dates were wrong in the original survey and I have corrected them after comparing them with the headstones.
