LAKEVIEW CEMETERY TRANSCRIPTION PAGE



[From WCHC Survey Book]This cemetery is located on County Road 454 just off FM 2765, east of El Campo. It is fenced on three sides with no gate and is well cared for. Pete and Kay Noska, El Campo conducted a survey on site in 1985. In 1993 Charles E. Petersen, El Campo, found the cemetery overgrown. Mr. Petersen cleaned the cemetery and conducted an on site survey. Since that date Mr. Petersen has maintained the cemetery and is the Secty/Treas. for the Lakeview Cemetery Assoc. In 1997, Linda Joy Stovall copied the original record book and plat for the Wharton County Historical Commission.
The original cemetery and school/church lot was given by Olaf Bergwell, and a cemetery association formed. November 28, 1902, a recording fee of $54.06 was paid to the Wharton County Clerk. A newspaper ad in 1904 offered burial lots for sale to the Lakeview Cemetery. Later the cemetery association purchased the 1 30/100 school lot, paying $15.40. The school house had also been used as a church for the area. A quit claim deed was recorded in 1968 to the Lakeview Cemetery Assoc. Vol 395,Pg35.
In 1902 the record book shows expenses of: 50 shade trees, 10 cents each; posts and wire $30; mowing $1, etc. The Cemetery Association is still active and has officers. It was reorganized September 3, 1968. The cemetery is divided into four sections, each section has 60 blocks (6 across, 10 down), each block has 8 lots. 1999 prices: Block-$1,200; 1/2block (4 lots)$800;individual lot $250. The names on the individual blocks on the plat are those persons who purchased the block. Block 1 was purchased by Frank Jakub who donated it for indigent burials. The first recorded burial is August 19, 1902, John N. Mann, Sec. I, Block 15. Prior to 1917 the record book lists only a name, lot and breif ID.The plat and ledger don't always match names and lots. P17 listing denotes Prior 1917, and those burials without a marker cannot be authenticated to actual location.
Section I contains Blocks 1-60; Section II Blocks 61-120; Section III 121 to 180; Section IV 181 to 240. Section I lots are all sold out, only a few remain in Section II, and only the first row of Sections III & IV have been sold as of 1999. A recent change of Block ownership is for Sec. II, Block 108 now owned by Mildred Moore.

In 2007 Janet Hobizal, of the Historical Cemetery Preservation Association and Wharton County Historical Museum, went out and took photos of every headstone in the cemetery which is what you see on this page. She compared the survey to the photos and then added the burials listed from 1985 and from the 1997 record book and the photos to make this most up to date listing. If corrections were made from the survey they are listed.
