The large broken monument and crypt show the final resting place for this young woman. Augusta E. Newell, born in Oct of 1838, and died July 1857, at the age of 19 years and three months. The daughter of John D. Newell and Virginia Tennessee Newell. This painting was painted after her death. She resembles her mother very much. We also have photos of Augusta's mother and her sister,Emma.
Why did they paint her holding her hand up as if to show her ring on her left hand? Could this be a wedding band? Could she have been engaged to a Cockrell?
Why was she buried in this cemetery? These questions and more are still a mystery but we are working on solving them.
The photo was furnished by Michael Corbett who's family owns this cemetery and land and he is researching this cemetery and the families buried here, as well as other family cemeteries in this area.
If you have any information please contact me at the Museum so that we can share information with Michael Corbett. jbh
