CORBETT ESTATE CEMETERY PHOTOS

SPANISH CAMP,TEXAS

This cemetery is in a cow pasture and there are two brick crypts and one large broken marble monument. There are several large marble slabs scattered around and one small grave off to the left of the crypts. I was told by a local man that there was a large monument in this pasture that had four or five names on it from the camp when Santa Anna and his men camped in this pasture, however, I could not find it. I was also told by the man that it is town lore that when it is foggy out you can see small camp fires all over the pasture.

The large broken monument and crypt show the final resting place for this young woman. Augusta E. Newell, born in Oct of 1838, and died July 1857, at the age of 19 years and three months. The daughter of John D. Newell and Virginia Tennessee Newell.

This painting was painted after her death. She resembles her mother very much. We also have photos of Augusta's mother and her sister,Emma.

Why did they paint her holding her hand up as if to show her ring on her left hand? Could this be a wedding band? Could she have been engaged to a Cockrell? Why was she buried in this cemetery? These questions and more are still a mystery but we are working on solving them.

The photo was furnished by Michael Corbett who's family owns this cemetery and land and he is researching this cemetery and the families buried here, as well as other family cemeteries in this area.

If you have any information please contact me at the Museum so that we can share information with Michael Corbett. jbh
