BOWDEN CEMETERY PHOTOS

HUNGERFORD, TEXAS

PAGE ONE

Bowden cemetery is located on CR 229. Coming out of Wharton going towards East Bernard right after you cross under HWY 59 CR229 is the first CR to the right, it is right up over the railroad tracks. This cemetery has some very old graves in it, including many military headstones. It also has many many graves that are not marked. There is a large clump of brush in the middle of the cemetery that has gravestones under it. This cemetery really needs to be cleaned up and restored. There are a couple of men who mow the property but that is about all the upkeep they do. There is no sign to say the name of this cemetery and I had to ask many people before I finally was told the name of it. However there is a big sign in the front which is the first picture..draw your own conclusions.

From Wharton County Cemetery Survey book at Museum in Wharton, Texas:

This Negro cemetery is located on CR 229 which is a dead end road off old hwy 59 aka Richmond Rd, now designated Loop 183. It is approx 1/4 mile north of Little Zion Baptist Church on the east bank of Peach Creek. This is not a membership only cemetery. This is the site of the first land grants to be given by the mexican government in the 1820's in this area to William Kincheloe and Alexander Jackson. Peack Creek community was one of only 4 communities to exist when Wharton County was created.

There is an area next to the road which has no visable tombstones and is reputed to contain very old burials.
