Alfred "Al" Mortensen
MortensenAlfred "Al" Mortensen, age 96, lifelong Texan died Monday, April 29, 2002. He was born on June 23, 1905 at Chocolate Bayou, Texas to the union of Jens Mortensen and Martha Marie Petersen Mortensen of Copenhagen, Denmark. Al was one of the original members of St. Luke's United Methodist Church and was still active in his Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Executive Association of Houston for 64 years and River Oaks Country Club for 55 years. Al was the founder and original owner of both Southwestern Camera Co. and Southwestern Theatre Equipment Co. He owned and operated numerous movie theatres mainly in Houston area along with other towns in Texas. Al had been an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed his many years at Rockport, texas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Virginia "Gin" Mortensen and brothers Ernest Mortensen and Carl Mortensen. Al is survived by sons Bob Mortensen and wife Sue of Sugar Land; Harold Mortensen and wife Judy of Seaman, Ohio; daughters Martha Middlebrook and husband Don of Wharton, Texas, Betty Matthys and husband Sherman of Antonio, Colorado; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Harold and Nina Northington; sister in law Anita Northington; grandchildren Mike Mortensen, Don Al Middlebrook, Laura Mortensen, Julie Boilek, Russell Matthys, Wade Matthys, Melony Cave, Tanya Mortensen, Daniel Mortensen; three great grandchildren Mile Lee Mortensen, Brittany Mortensen and Lauren Mortensen and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call on Wednesday May 1, 2002 at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons 1010 Bering Drive where the family will be present for visitation from 5 until 7 p.m.. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday May 2, 2002 in the chapel with Dr. James W. Moore of St. Luke's' United Methodist Church officiating. Graveside services and interment will follow at 1:00 pm in Egypt, Texas at the family cemetery.
