Funeral services for May
Salley “Auntie” Buckler, 103
of Wharton were held at 11
a.m. Thursday, August 15,
from the First Baptist Church
of Wharton, Dr. Donnie
Melton officiating with inter-
ment following in the Whar-
ton City Cemetery.

Mrs. Buckler, known as
“Auntie” to many friends,
died August 13, 1985, at home
She was born on April 15,
1882, in Belmont, Louisiana,
to Star Hamilton and Willie
Judson Heard Salley. She
moved to Texas in 1905 where
she met and married
James (Jim) W. Buckler in
1906 in El Campo. They mov-
ed to Glen Flora where Mr.
Buckler farmed rice. Their
son Harold James Buckler
was born there in 1908. Mr.
Buckler died on July 13, 1915,
while living in Lane City.

After his death, Mrs. Buckler
worked at a variety of jobs in
several offices and hospitals.
She put her homemaking
skills to use by working as a
housekeeping supervisor for
the Baptist Memorial
Hospital in Houston and she
also workind in the Baptist
Hospital in San Antonio. On
October 29, 1961, her only son
Harold James died, and the
following year, Auntie May
and her Siamese cat
“Tinker” moved to Wharton
to live with her niece Pauline
Kral and has made her home
here for the past 23 years. She
was a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include her
grandson Norman H. Buckler
of Seattle, Wash.; nieces:
Billie Altman Featherston of
Palestine, Pauline Kral of
Wharton, Evelyn Reed of
Dallas, Wanda Salley Bunton
of El Campo, Hazel Salley
Roecker of Markham,
Dorothy Sulaidie and Sybil
Salley, both of Houston;
nephews: C.D. Salley of
Arkansas, A.L. Salley of
Arkansas, A.L. Salley of
Bryan and Everett Salley of
Tulsa, Okla. Several great-
great-great nieces and
nephews also survive.

Smoot Roecker, Royce
Featherston, Dick Wilcoxen
and James Nelson Cowgers.

the Wharton Funeral Home.
