Royal Navy Settlers

 

James Painter was a sailor on HMS Sirius and settkled at Norfolk Island in 1791. He left the island in 1794 and later received a land grant in 1797. In 1828 he was farming at Pitt Town.

John Palmer, born in 1760, joined the Navy as a captain's servant when he was nine. He saw action in the American War of Independance and was captured by the French in 1781. After his release in 1783, he married Susan Sutwell. He arrived in Sydney Cove as purser on HMS Sirius. In June 1791, Palmer was appointed Commisary and responsible for all government stores and funds and was official supplier contractor and banker to the settlement. He atempted to cross the Blue Mountains in 1793. He sailed to England in 1796 and returned to Sydney in Novmebr 1800 with his wife and children along with his two sisters and a brother. Palmer became known as one of the principal farners in the Colony. Siding with Bligh, he incurred the hostiliy of Macarthur and the interim government. In 1810 he went to England to give evidence against Johnston and returned in 1813 only to fnd his properties heaviliy mortgagaed. In 1819 he was retired on half pay by Macquarie and began to devote his time to farming. By 1828 he had 3,100 sheep and 447 cattle. He died at Waddon on 27 Septemnber 1833, the last surviving officer of the First Fleet in NSW.

James Proctor was a seaman on HMS Sirius. He went with the ship to Norfolk island and settled. He died there 21 October 1801.
