Royal Navy Settlers

 

John McNeal, a sailor from HMS Sirius, worked as a gardener on Garden Island. On 4 May 1788 his drunken mates quarreled with him and bashed him about the head with a musket for which they received 500 lashes. McNeal died at Sydney Cove on 22 April 1790.

Frederick Meredith was a seaman on HMS Sirius. In 1790 he had a daughter, Charlotte by Mary Allen. In 1793 he was discharged from HMS Sirius and settled at Liberty Plains - named because all the settlers were free. Meredith later worked as a Constable and in 1826 was appointed District Constable of Botany Bay. He died on 23 June 1836 at Bankstown.

William Mitchell was quarter master on HMS Sirius. In1791 he settled on Norfolk Island after the wreck of the ship. He was made a Constable and remained on the island until evacuation. He settlled in Hobart where he died on 12 June 1827, aged 73.

History and Achievements: wedded to the heiress of Camden, Captain Macarthur-Onslow, turning his sword into a ploughshare, became a prominent agriculturalist and carried on the breeding of the flocks of stud sheep introduced to Australia by the pioneer sheep breeder, John Macarthur (1792).
